Google pixel 5: What an unexciting phone!!!

I am a big pixel fan. Ever since the pixel 1 came out, I always wanted one. Stock android and superb camera is the main reason behind that. So when I got a chance, I bought one. I have been using a pixel 1 for the past 2 and a half years.

I have always followed all the pixel events for the past 4 years. After pixel 1, pixel 2 came which was also a great phone. But after each new pixel came, these phones seemed little unappealing each year. Then the pixel 3a was launched and pixel again grabbed our attention. For the first time we got a flagship level camera from a mid range phone. Arguably, it was one of the best camera on the market.

But the pixel 4 was a huge disappointment. Bad battery, huge notch combined with telephoto lense instead of an ultrawide lense? Count me out.

Then I heard the rumors and found google was launching a new pixel 5 with ultrawide lense, big battery and a price tag hard to resist. My pixel 1 has become very old and I was ready to change my phone.

I also like iPhone and Samsung but I prefer pixel. Problem is, iPhone comes with a big price tag and not the best camera on the market. But the biggest drawback of iphone is lighting cable. Samsung phones are ok but I do prefer the over pixel photos over the samsung’s over saturated photos. So, the Pixel 5 seemed like a good option.

Then the pixel 5 launched with a subpar processor and I was very confused. They are charging 700 dollars or 623 euros for a phone with a snapdragon 700 series? Why?

Then they launched pixel 4a 5g with same camera, same processors for 200 dollars less. WHY?

It is no brainer to choose 4a 5g over pixel 5 because I am getting all the important features for 200 dollars less.

I went to store to check out the new pixel and again was dumbfounded. The pixel 4a 5g costs 499 dollars in USA. So it should cost around 422 euros or lets say 450 euros in Germany. But it costs 499 euros in Germany.

Dollar and euros are not same!! But I think the people who were setting the price thought “Lets swap the dollar sign with euro sign and no one will notice.”

Ok fine. I am not in USA. I want a cheap phone with great specs.

So Pixel 4a 5g it is. Then I started to check out the phone and seemed like google don’t want people to but this phone.

Shocking!!!

Let me explain. Pixel 1 had huge bezels and the phone looks very outdated. Now a days most people prefer a phone which is not very big and easy to use in one hand. The pixel 4a 5g is huge!!! The size of pixel 4a 5g is exactly the same as the original pixel minus the bezels. When buying a phone, I also care about how it feels and how it fits in my hands. Sorry to say, it felt really weird.

Then samsung dropped the biggest bomb of 2020 (in the smart phone market). They launched s20 fe with exact same camera and processor as Samsung S20 with the price of 699 dollars or around 630 euros.

Inorder to compete with Samsung, google is offering a 250 euro headphone with every pixel 5 for free for a limited time. It is currently helping them to boost the sales but I don’t think it will help them for long. So I am currently waiting for pixel to drop the prices significantly. Although I am bashing it, I am also most probably going to buy it but not for the current price.

When I tried to test S20, it felt so much better in my hand. The phone is not too wide, not too tall. You can operate it with your one hand. The camera is great and also the processor is currently the best snapdragon in the market. Comparing pixel 5 with Samasung s20 fe side by side, pixel seems very outdated. Or you could say, Highly Unexciting.
